Hoist Brief – Modal, by McKillop

Out of the Box

McKillop has sent us some underwear to try. The first up is the Hoist Brief sized as a large and Cargo Green in color.

The Hoist brief is made from 1-type of fabric that is a blended material of:

  • Modal 94%
  • Lycra 6%

The blended fabric has a 2-way stretch property that scores 1.2-inches on the stretch test. The fabric is really thin and is somewhat see-through. The brief is put together with multiple pieces of this fabric that are sewn together to form the brief style. These pieces consist of:

  • 1-piece that provides full coverage of the buttocks, down to the bottom in the crotch and around, high on the hips, to the side of the hips.
  • 2-pieces that provide coverage of the pelvis from the side of the hips and the groin. The 2 pieces are sewn together (as halves) down the center in the front to form the complete pouch. This center seam is an over edge stitched seam that runs from the waistband down to the bottom. The outer sides of the pouch are also part of the leg openings.
  • The leg openings are trimmed with an elastic band inseam that is 0.75-inches wide and is attached with multiple lines of flat loop stitching.
  • 1-piece of elastic band that is 1.5-inches wide is used as the waistband. The waistband is joined with an end-to-end stitched seam in the center rear to complete the loop. The waistband has a plush finish and is embroidered with the “MCKILLOP” name and the product tag is sewn on the waistband in the rear. The waistband is attached to the fabric with multiple lines of flat loop stitching.
  • The cut and shape of the fabric and the elastic banding at the leg openings are used to form the Hoist pouch design. The Hoist style pouch design is described as a pistol shaped pouch. (See below illustration for McKillop’s pouch designs)

Field Test

Mckillop’s Hoist brief has been out on the testing range 5 times for about 49 hours of wear. The wear time has been a mix of activities from operating heavy equipment at work, working at my woodworking shop and some travel and shopping time.

Scores and Review

The Modal/Lycra blended fabric is very soft and smooth on the skin. It’s a light and thin material that is somewhat see-through. The fabric is very breathable and moisture wicking. The fabric weave has a lot of elasticity so it’s very flexible that contributes to it’s form fitting wear. The fabric has no signs of pilling or color fade.

The waistband has a plush finish on the inside that is very smooth on the skin. It has plenty of elasticity to keep it snug and in place around the waist. The waistband is wide so it doesn’t cut in to the skin. There hasn’t been any problems with rollover, twisting or warping. The waistband size fit my 36-inch waist just fine.

The leg openings have the elastic banding that is made very similar to the waistband, just narrower. Here too the banding is smooth on the skin. The elastic eliminates any chance of sagging or gapping in the leg openings. No leg material to give any problems with bunching or ride up.

The pouch is very comfortable and with it’s extreme 3D contoured shape (Pistol) it has plenty of room. The shape of the pouch in conjunction with the elastic properties of the fabric and seams gives the pouch a fit that surrounds the genitals and provides a support that both lifts and pushes the genitals forward. This Hoist style pouch produces an extreme bulge effect. The pouch provides complete separation of the genitals from any skin-to-skin contact with the legs. I had no problems with any pinching or squashing.

Over all the Hoist Brief definitely qualifies as a slim fit style of brief. It has a low-rise fit on the waist and the legs have a high-hip cut. The brief is very form fitting and this one sized as a large fits my body type very well and in accordance with the size guide for a 36″-38″ waist. There is plenty of flexibility for any body movement, kind of fells sporty. I had no problems with any chaffing or rub points. The hoist brief has retained it’s out of the box shape. I have noticed some loose threads in the stitching where the waistband is attached to the fabric.

Mckillop has went the extra mile when it comes to pouch designs and this one with the Hoist design functions exactly as advertised. This brief works very well and performed great even on a long day on the job. The pouch kept things lifted up and out from in between the legs very well while I was operating heavy equipment. It also performed well during physical actives such as hiking or workouts. Just a word of caution though, with the see-through and bulge aspects of this underwear, this brief may be a little showy to parade around the house in. But if you want to be bold with a great performing and comfortable brief, you can get the Hoist brief directly from the McKillop’s (MCK) online store. They are currently listed at $21.99 a pair. Mckillop does run sales too so keep an eye out to save $$.

More coming..

Until then, always start your day with a fresh clean pair and be safe out there.

P.S. Thanks a bunch to Ryan for your awesome support.
