Everyday Boxer Brief, by Woolly Clothing

Out of The Box

Here is the Everyday Boxer Brief offered by Woolly Clothing. Its comes in sized as an Extra-Large and this one is Charcoal. Listed at $27.99.

The everyday Boxer Brief is made from one type of fabric that is:

  • 100% Merino Wool

This is a solid weave of fabric that is thin and slightly see-through when stretched. The fabric has a 2-way elasticity that scores a 1.5-inches on the stretch test. The boxer brief is made from multiple pieces of this material that are sewn together to form the boxer brief shape. These pieces or sections are:

  • 1-pieces that provides coverage down the center of the buttocks from waistband to the gusset piece in the bottom
  • 2-pieces that are used to complete the coverage of the outside of the buttocks, the hips around to the pelvis and most of the legs.
  • 1 or 2 pieces (about 4-inches wide) that is used as a gusset in the crotch that ties in the rear seat, legs and bottom of the pouch. This gusset also completes the coverage of the inner legs. The gusset is double layered. The double layer could be made from one piece of fabric that is folded to make the layering.
  • 2-pieces that are used to make the pouch area the provides complete coverage of the pelvis and groin area. They are layered in the classic style with side horizontal fly access points with the open access points on each layer located on opposite sides. Both layers have a small vertical center stitched seam located at the bottom of the pouch and runs upward for about 3-inches. This is a gathered stitch used to provide some contouring in the bottom of the pouch.

All the sections or pieces are joined together with multi-line flat loop stitching. The unattached edges of the flay access points are trimmed with a 0.25 inch strip of folded fabric hem. The bottom of the legs are hemmed with stitched folding of fabric.

The waistband is made from one piece of elastic banding that is about 1.25-inches wide. It is joined in the center rear with an end-to-end stitched seam. The band is attached to the fabric with multi lines of stitching. The waistband also seams to have a felt like finish on both sides. The “Woolly” logo is embroidered in the waistband and there is also a small tag with the little Woolly mammoth image that is attached to the front outside of the waistband. The product information is imprinted on the inside rear of the fabric.

Field Test

The Everyday Boxer Brief has been on the testing range 5 times with about 66.5 hours of wear. This was mostly at work operating heavy equipment and the daily commute ride. They have been through the laundry cycle 5 times.

The Scores

The merino wool fabric is indeed very soft and no it’s not itchy. The fabric is thin and light on the skin and is very breathable and moisture wicking. It feels cooling especially if the is a breeze. The fabric has a lot of elasticity even though there is not another material added, like spandex or elastane, that is usually used to add elasticity properties. So it just may be the nature of the fabric or the weave to make it. I have not seen any pilling or fatigue in the fabric and no color fade. The waistband is a sturdy and has nice elasticity. The finish on the waistband is very soft on the skin. I had no problems with rollover or twisting. It stayed put with no sagging. The leg length is comfortable and the hems didn’t cut in. There is a little ride up in the legs when sitting or ridding. There is plenty of room the the pouch area and things hang pretty loose. Since this boxer brief is made in the traditional or classic style, the support and separation properties to the genitals is minimal, not quite commando though. The bulge effect is minimal. The stitching in the seams is nice and flat with no uncomfortable rub points. There are a few spots where some of the fabric edges are sticking out of the seams and a few squiggle’s in the stitch lines. I have not seen any gaps or loose stitching in the seams.

The Everyday Boxer Brief has the Traditional/Classic boxer brief fit. The X-large fit me in accordance with their sizing guide. Its very flexible and moves well with the body. There is no chaffing or restrictions and I didn’t experience any pinching or hair pulling. All in all this is a well designed boxer brief in the classic style.

The merino wool fabric is the outstanding feature of this underwear. I know that your thinking ” But its wool, how is it”, I will just stop you there. Trust me, this fabric is really soft. It’s performed well on the job and is for sure an Everyday underwear. If your a fan of the traditional or classic stye in an a boxer brief or desire the coverage, then this will fit the bill.
